Between about 1800 and 1835 he traded under various names and partnerships, including Goulding & Co, and produced fine woodwind instruments. By about 1800 the recorder had been largely replaced by the transverse flute in orchestral music, so this instrument would have seemed rather old-fashioned. This example terminates in a flute-like tube rather than a cone, which was more typical of recorders. The aim was probably to make it sound more like an orchestral flute.\r\n","physicalDescription":"'Stained boxwood in three joints. There is also a beehive-shaped removable cap with a blowing hole at the top. Under the cap, the top of the head is cut away to leave a 1.4 cm space, presumably to contain a sponge. The foot joint is shaped as in flutes of the period (as in 20/8 [Museum no. 695-1883]). A hole has later been pierced in the cap, perhaps for affixing a membrane which would give a buzzing sound when the player hummed whilst playing.' - Anthony Baines<i>Catalogue of Musical Instruments in the Victoria and Albert Museum - Part II: Non-keyboard instruments</i>(London, 1998), p. 87.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Goulding & Co","id":"A27655"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x37726"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"boxwood","id":"AAT12002"}],"techniques":[{"text":"staining","id":"AAT53058"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Turned, drilled and stained boxwood pipe and mouthpiece.","categories":[{"text":"Musical instruments","id":"THES48919"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2017JW7649","2017JU2454"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES299369"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tenor recorder","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"about 1800","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"66","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"total","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"55.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sounding length","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"23.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"length of upper joint (excl. cap and tenons)","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"24.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"length of middle joint (\" \")","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"13.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"length of lower joint (\" \")","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"2.65","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"bore at the plug","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"2.45","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"bore at top of main joint","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"1.85","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"bore at bottom of main joint","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"1.60","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"bore at lower end of foot","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measurements taken from Anthony Baines: <i>Catalogue of Musical Instruments in the Victoria and Albert Museum - Part II: Non-keyboard instruments.</i> (London, 1998), p. 87.","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Goulding & Co","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Stamped. on the top joint."}],"objectHistory":"This instrument was bought by the museum in 1882 for 15 shillings (£0.75).
