This panel corresponds to the right undersleeve of a woman’s waistcoat. It is worked in an embroidery technique called blackwork, with a single colour of silk, usually black, but also sometimes blue, red or, greenn on linen. Blackwork was particularly popular for dress accessories such as handkerchiefs, coifs, caps, shirts and smocks.\r\n\r\nThis is a very accomplished example of 17th-century blackwork in the speckling style. The arrangement of tiny running stitches in black mimics the subtle shading of woodblock prints, giving a three-dimensional effect to the pattern. The design is also very skilful in its naturalism, particularly the insects depicted. Grasshoppers, dragonflies, butterflies, moths, caterpillars and beetles, along with a single spider’s web enliven the embroidery.","physicalDescription":"Right undersleeve of a woman's waistcoat, of fine bleached linen embroidered with black silk in stem and speckling stitch. The pattern consists of scrolling stems bearing vine leaves and grapes, with grasshoppers, dragonflies, butterflies, caterpillars, frogs, a spider web, snail, moth and beetle. A modern backing has been added for support.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen","id":"x29412"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen, silk; hand-woven, hand-embroidered","categories":[{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[{"text":"Jacobean","id":"AAT107014"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2017KD7302","2017KD7294","2017KD7297","2017KD7299","2017KD7300","2018KT4442","2018KT4443","2018KT4444","2018KT4445","2018KT4446","2018KT4447","2018KT4448","2018KT4449","2018KT4450","2018KT4451","2018KT4452","2018KT4453","2018KT4454","2018KT4455","2018KT4456","2018KT4457","2018KT4458","2018KT4459","2018KT4460","2018KT4461","2018KT4462","2018KT4463","2018KT4464","2011ER8583","2012FN1449","2019LX7427"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES310159"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sleeve part","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1610-1620","earliest":"1610-01-01","latest":"1620-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchase.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"61.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"overall, approx.","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"21.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"at top, approx.","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"620","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2017","earliest":"2017-01-01","latest":"2017-12-31"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"220","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2017","earliest":"2017-01-01","latest":"2017-12-31"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchase from the executors of the 3rd Lord Derwent.
