The gown is open down the front in the English or 'tight-back' style of stitched pleats at the back.  The sleeves are elbow-length with two sleeve ruffles.  The bodice and sleeves are lined with unbleached linen.  Six widths of silk make up the skirts, with a waist seam at the sides and front.  A narrow edging of white silk lace decorates the sleeve ruffles and the robings.  \r\n\r\nAlterations for fancy dress include unpicking the robings and stitching a long triangle of the same silk to the right front to make a stomacher.\r\n\r\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"","id":""},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"},{"text":"silk thread","id":"x30127"},{"text":"linen thread","id":"x35336"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand weaving","id":"AAT53643"},{"text":"brocading","id":"AAT53648"},{"text":"hand sewing","id":"AAT257459"},{"text":"bobbin lace making","id":"x30355"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk, linen, silk thread, linen thread; hand-woven brocade, hand-sewn, bobbin lace ","categories":[{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006BD1859","2011EV1802"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"022","id":"THES310566"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Gown","id":""}],[{"text":"Dress","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Spitalfields","id":"x29420"},"association":{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"},"note":"textile"},{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"sewing","id":"AAT53658"},"note":"gown"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1738 - 1739","earliest":"1738-01-01","latest":"1739-12-31"},"association":{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"},"note":"textile"},{"date":{"text":"1760 - 1769","earliest":"1760-01-01","latest":"1769-12-31"},"association":{"text":"sewing","id":"AAT53658"},"note":"gown"},{"date":{"text":"1870 - 1910","earliest":"1870-01-01","latest":"1910-12-31"},"association":{"text":"altered","id":"AAT105442"},"note":"fancy dress"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Miss Frances Vickers.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Weight","value":"1.96","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"148.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"shoulder to hem at centre back","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"88.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"bust under armholes, including stomacher","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"A woman's English-style gown, 1760s, English; Brown silk, brocaded in floral pattern with coloured silks, Spitalfields, 1738-39","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["443-1888"],"accessionNumberNum":"443","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1888,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-07-22","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":false}}
