For most nineteenth century brides, a wedding dress was an expensive purchase which was expected to be worn many times after the ceremony. Many brides chose coloured day dresses to wear for \"best\" afterwards, but there were other ways to prolong the life of a fashionable white wedding dress beyond its original wearing.\r\n\r\nThis dress illustrates two methods. It was made with removable longer sleeves to enable it to be worn both as a day dress and as a short-sleeved evening gown. The rich silk satin is said to have been re-dyed red, but a close examination of the dress does not support this story. Some brides did have their white dresses dyed, and a coloured dress would have been more practical in the longer term than white. A re-dyed dress could then have been worn for a number of years afterwards.\r\n\r\nThe dress is said to have been worn by Agnes Eleanor Hubbersty when she married Nicholas Price Wood in Darley, North Yorkshire, on 27 April 1843.","physicalDescription":"Red satin, short-sleeved bodice with low neckline, the sleeves trimmed with ruching and black lace, and co-ordinating satin skirt with panels of pleated ruching down the front; two separate long tight sleeves with lace frills at wrists","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk satin","id":"x33509"},{"text":"lace","id":"AAT132861"}],"techniques":[{"text":"dress-making","id":"AAT53650"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"silk satin","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Marriage","id":"THES48921"},{"text":"Evening wear","id":"THES48999"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2009CD6666","2020MU0231"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES307428"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES307428"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES307428"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES307428"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Skirt","id":""}],[{"text":"Evening bodice","id":""}],[{"text":"Sleeve","id":""}],[{"text":"Sleeve","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1843","earliest":"1843-01-01","latest":"1843-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Miss M D Wood","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"106.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"skirt","note":"measurement converted from department register "},{"dimension":"Length","value":"33.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"bodice","note":"measurement converted from department register "},{"dimension":"Width","value":"46.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"across shoulders","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"bodice","note":"measurement converted from department register "},{"dimension":"Length","value":"41.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"each","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"separate sleeves","note":"measurement converted from department register "}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"A label originally attached to this dress states \"Wedding dress (subsequently dyed) of Agnes E Hubbersty married N P Wood in 1848 - Red satin\".\r\n\r\nA search online revealed that the bride came from Wirksworth. The parish records as well as memorials in the parish church of Wirksworth (in Derby) between 1600-1900 have been made available online, and reveal that Agnes Eleanor Hubbersty (15 May 1812-December 8 1892) married Nicholas Price Wood, a banker and solicitor. She was the daughter of the Reverend Nathan Hubbersty BD (1767-1828) , formerly headmaster of Wirksworth grammar school, and Mary Dorothy Hubbersty (née Tomlinson) (1777-1852).\r\n\r\nFurther research uncovered that Nicholas Price Wood was born 19 Feb 1810 at Brownhills, and died at Wirksworth Hall on 10 July 1868. It also revealed that he and Agnes were married on 27 April 1843 (rather than 1848) at Darley, North Yorkshire.\r\n\r\nThe dress does not appear to have been re-dyed, so was possibly always red.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Red satin wedding dress, 1843, English","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.30-1945","T.30A-1945","T.30B-1945","T.30C-1945"],"accessionNumberNum":"30","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1945,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Skirt","Evening bodice","Sleeve [1]","Sleeve [2]"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-01-01","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
