For example, the actor David Garrick ordered a similar set, but with rounded ends, from the prominent cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale. In 1771, he paid ten pounds and ten shillings for a pair of dining tables for his London house in the Adelphi, off The Strand: 'A set of Mahogany Dining Tables with Circular Ends to Joyn together complete'. To protect the polished mahogany surfaces he also paid for '3 Damask Leather Covers to the 2 circular ends & middle part; A Green Cloath cover to ditto (in 2)'. \n\nThis object is on loan to Sewerby Hall.","physicalDescription":"A pair of dining tables which fit together to form one long table, in mahogany with carved decoration in low relief. Each table has a falling flap, and is supported on five fluted and tapered legs with blocks above, carved with paterae. The tops have figured, quartered veneer, with a border inlaid with a chequer pattern in dark and light woods. At the two ends are projecting corners. The table frame has fluted sides and at each end is a drawer with a fluted front and a silver lock-plate with a swag of husks carved in high relief. After inspection the tables were identified as folding dining tables, circa 1770. They had been in Mrs Templeton’s family for over a century. They were purchased on 23 May 1929 for £300. The tables were for a time lent to Oakwell Hall, West Yorkshire. During the 1990s the tables stood in the Director's dining room at the Museum. \n\nChristopher Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale (London: Christie's/Studio Vista, 1978), quotes the Chippendale bill for dining tables supplied to David Garrick, p.245.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"A mahogany dining table made up of two gate-leg tables that can be used together as a dining table, or separately as pier tables or side tables, raised on tapering, fluted legs, the friezes carved with fluting, with central panels carved with a roundel and swag of laurel, the outset corners of the frieze carved with oval paterae.
