The low column seems to have been introduced following the discovery of the supposed original column in Rome. The sculpture is ultimately derived from the work of the Castilian sculptor Gregorio Fernández (c. 1576-1636), who executed a number of versions of this subject, and whose sculpture was widely imitated during the 17th century.","physicalDescription":"He stands, nude except for a flowing loin-cloth the ends of which are fastened by a cord on the left side.
