The body was covered in clay and fired in a kiln. It was completely burnt in the process, leaving space in the clay mould for liquid bronze to be poured in and allowed to cool, providing an exact replica of the crab. It is thought to date from the nineteenth century and to be based on the design by Nicholas Sprimont for a pair of salt cellars in the Royal Collection, made for Frederick, Prince of Wales in 1742-3.","physicalDescription":"Crab with shells, bronze. The composition which is probably cast from nature shows a crab on a roughly oval base studded with shells and wood, before it is a large shell on to which it holds with its left pincer and two right forelegs. The right pincer which was originally presumably helf up has been broken off. The crab is a common shore crab frequent in European waters and the Adriatic and the shells are also European varieties.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Sprimont, Nicholas","id":"A8880"},"association":{"text":"designed by","id":"x40048"},"note":"after"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2015HX8587","2015HX8586","2015HX3647","2016JA9894","2017JV9277","2017JV9609"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES409056"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":"x45409"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1745","earliest":"1740-01-01","latest":"1749-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"16.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"10","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions were taken by SCP on 27.10.14 for <b>Bronze Zoo: A Sculptural Menagerie</b>","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased for £45 from Mr F Hughes.
