The group is made differently from Fanelli's own bronzes, the two figures being cast separately.\r\n\r\nNessus the centaur was a mythological figure who was shot by Hercules when Nessus tried to ravish Hercules' wife Deianira, while helping her across a river. On a journey Hercules and Deianiera came to a river, where Nessus was the ferryman and tried sexually to assault her. When Hercules realised this, he shot Nessus with a bow and arrow. When dying, Nessus told Deianira to collect his blood as it would one day help her as a love elixir; he claimed that anyone who wore a garment rubbed with the blood would love her forever.","physicalDescription":"Deianira, naked, is sitting sidewards on Nessus' back, with her right leg bent and her left hand around his left shoulder and held by Nessus' left bent arm. He looks to the right and Deianira looks towards him. Both Nessus' front legs (hooves) are lifted from the ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Fanelli, Francesco","id":"A8376"},"association":{"text":"after","id":"THES283471"},"note":"possibly after a model by"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Myths & Legends","id":"THES49005"},{"text":"Bronze","id":"THES49033"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2016JB0810","2006AE5135","2016JB0807","2016JB0809","2016JB0811","2018KP5019"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES409055"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1675-1700","earliest":"1670-01-01","latest":"1700-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dr. W.
