Paolo, Bologna, in 1641. The altar was designed by Borromini on the commission of Cardinal Bernardino Spada.\r\nIn technique it is closely reminiscent of 111-1869. The detail of the robes and background is, however, more highly chased. \r\n\r\nAlgardi was an Italian sculptor, architect and draughtsman. Alongside Bernini he was the most important sculptor in Rome active around the middle of the 17th century. He produced the classizing antithesis to Bernini's High Baroque sculpture. They were seen and experienced at the time as rivals and equals.","physicalDescription":"The Virgin is seated in the centre on a rock or mound, turned to the left towards the Child, who lies sleeping on her cloak. She extends the cloak with her right, and touches the Child's arm with her left. In the left background is an angel holding up a curtain. On the right beneath a tree is St. Joseph kneeling on one knee, with his head supported on his right hand and an open book in his left.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Algardi, Alessandro","id":"A6711"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"x43862"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Relief in bronze","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Reliefs","id":"THES49035"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2019MA6796"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"015","id":"THES395667"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Relief","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"or Bologna"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1640","earliest":"1635-01-01","latest":"1644-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"111-1869","id":"O70057"},"association":"Version"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"29.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"35.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by Dr. W. L. Hildburgh, F. S. A., 1952.\r\nThe relief seems to depend from a design by Algardi. In technique it is closely reminiscent of 111-1869. The detail of the robes and background is, however, more highly chased. The existence of the relief is not mentioned by Passeri or Bellori, but it is likely to have been produced in the sixteen-forties at about the same date as the Martyrdom of St. Paul (A.68-1952).","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Relief, gilt bronze, The Rest on the Flight into Egypt, by Alessandro Algardi, Italian, ca. 1640","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Pope-Hennessy, John. <u>Catalogue of Italian Sculpture in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
