He was in 1506 - together with his father and Michelangelo - in Rome when the Laokoon group was discovered. This experience had a great influence on his style, which was quite unique among the other 16th century sculptors. His style incorporated textual realism and emotional expressionism. He was in the 1520s an assistant to Michelangelo, working in the New Sacristy in San Lorenzo, Florence. There he carved the marble friezes of decorative masks. In 1560s he became co-founder of the Accademia del Disegno in Florence.","physicalDescription":"This medal shows on the obverse the bust and self portrait of the sculptor and architect Francesco Da Sangallo and on the reverse a terminal figure caressing a dog.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"da Sangallo, Francesco","id":"A6233"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Coins & Medals","id":"THES48974"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AN5231","2006AN5230","2018KW8347"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES395749"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Medal","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1550","earliest":"1550-01-01","latest":"1550-12-31"},"association":{"text":"dated","id":"AAT54714"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"6.98","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'FRANCESCO DASANGALLO SCVLTORE ET ARCHITETTO FIOREN'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed on the obverse."},{"content":"'M D L'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed on the obverse."},{"content":"'D / V / R'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed on the reverse, left of figure."},{"content":"'A / B / O'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed on the reverse, right of figure."}],"objectHistory":"Bought, 16s. 8d.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Medal, bronze, selfportrait of Franceso Da Sangallo, by Francesco Da Sangallo, Italy, Florence, dated 1550","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Inventory of Art Objects Acquired in the Year 1861. <u>In</u>: <u>Inventory of the Objects in the Art Division of the Museum at South Kensington, Arranged According to the Dates of their Acquisition.
