A.22-1959, represent Autumn and Winter and appear to have formed part of a set of four personifications of the Seasons. They were presumably set in niches and their condition suggests that these were indoors.\r\nThe quality of the carving is high, and in view of the eclecticism of the style - the quasi-Gothic treatment of the head of Autumn is in marked contrast with the advanced classicism of the pose - it is likely that these figures originate not from a provincial centre but from a court workshop. Considering the widespread destruction of the buildings of Paris in the second half of the 19th century, it is possible that these figures may have decorated a hotel in the capital, now obliterated.","physicalDescription":"On a small rocky ledge a female figure stands wearing a long tunic with short sleeves, the left side of which falls to the waist leaving the left breast bare. The head with short hair curling onto the nape, is inclined to the right shoulder. The headdress consists of a toque with jewelled border and side-piece, the centre being filled with fruit and beards of barley. The left hand holds a fold of drapery above the shoulder; the fold end in a four petalled flower. The right hand rests on an antler which passes behind the drapery. The head of the dear lies on the ledge beside her left foot. The tunic is divided at the hips.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stone","id":"AAT11176"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stone","categories":[{"text":"Myths & Legends","id":"THES49005"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2018KY0106"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"B","id":"THES397246"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statue","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1525 - ca. 1550","earliest":"1520-01-01","latest":"1554-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"A.22-1959","id":"O313565"},"association":"Ensemble"}],"creditLine":"Purchased with Art Fund support","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"137.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought together with A.22-1959 for £10,000 (G.
