He served as the Prime Minister of France from 1906 to 1909, and again from 1917 to 1920. He was also a journalist and physician. He had resisted the Annexion of Alsace by Germany in 1971, becoming senator of the Var district in 1902 and Minister of the Interior in 1906. He was hailed by the French people as Père Victoire' (Father Victory). On 17 January 1919 he was elected President of the Versailles Peace Conference. Clémenceau was nicknamed 'The Tiger' for the bold ruthlessness of his administration. He saw the German threat years before the onset of war, and urged military preparedness and close links with Great Britain.\r\n\r\nGilbaut began as a sculptor and medallist, but was forced by ill-health to abandon sculpture. He became recognised as an engraver of medals, producing medals of eminent figures of World War I.","physicalDescription":"Obverse: Informal profile portrait to right of the politician and statesman, Georges Clémenceau, wearing a soft hat and fur collar.
