The style of the drapery and the facial features have their closest affinities with altarpieces produced in the workshop of Jakob Maurus, active in Kempten/Allgäu around 1510-20. Although this is not likely to come from Maurus's own workshop, the scheme of the drapery the physiognomies, and the thick curly locks of hair seen in this relief are stylistically closely related to his work, and were probably made in the region of Kempten, Upper Swabia.","physicalDescription":"The crowned figure of St. Catherine of Alexandria stands with the right foot protruding, her head slightly inclined, looking to her left. She holds a sword in her right hand, and with her left catches the folds of her cloak which falls over her left shoulder. She wears a small cape over her shoulders, and a high-waisted and belted gown with wide sleeves. At her left are two posts and a wheel.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"limewood","id":"x42540"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"painted and gilded limewood","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"}],"styles":[{"text":"Late Gothic","id":"AAT20783"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2010EM3087","2017KB3725"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"26 (VA)","id":"THES49836"},"free":"","case":"CA002","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Relief St Catherine of Alexandria","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Upper Swabia","id":"x44990"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1520","earliest":"1515-01-01","latest":"1524-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of Mr Henry Oppenheimer through Art Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"109","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"45","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Probably exhibited at the Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts, USA, before 1927.
