It represents a kneeling monk probably St Bruno. With its sharply carved folds of drapery it bears some resemblance to the work of the Portuguese sculptor active in Spain, Manuel Pereira (1588-1683). St Bruno (about 1032-1101) was the founder of the Carthusian Order. Although never officially canonised, he is recognised as a saint, as the Holy See approved his cult for Carthusians in 1514, and this was extended to the Universial Church in 1674. He is usually portrayed in Carthusian habit holding a lily and with a skull.","physicalDescription":"Statuette in ivory of a monk in Carthusian habit, with rosary at his waist seen through the slit of his habit, kneels with his arms crossed over his chest, looking down to his right.\nA small nail is fixed to the top of the head; another is behind the left ear. The head has been broken off and re-attached; the back of the hood is partly a later addition; similarly there is a repair at the left knee, which has again been added. Remains of glue and fabric are visible on the underside, indicating where the piece must have been fixed to a base.
