Although the workmanship is not of high quality, the stylistic features of the relief suggest it is likely to be Spanish. It may have once been affixed to a box, or a house-altar.\r\nIvory was popular as a material for religious subjects, especially during the 17th and 18th centuries. Some ivories were carved in Spain, although little is known about the artists or their centres of activity. Spanish and Portuguese patrons imported ivories carved with Christian imagery from their territories overseas, such as the Philippines, Mexico and Goa. ","physicalDescription":"This pierced circular ivory medallion in relief represents the Nativity. In the centre is the sleeping Christ Child in the manger and on the right and left the kneeling figures of the Virgin and Joseph. Behind the manger and above three angels are playing musical instruments. God the Father and two angels holding a scroll hover overhead. The ox and ass appear in the foreground. The back is uncarved. Remains of an inscription in red are visible on the scroll. A label on the back is inscribed with the loan number '5012'.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Relief in ivory","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AD3490","2018KX4055"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"014","id":"THES395793"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Relief","id":""}],[{"text":"Medallion","id":"x31798"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Spain","id":"x29170"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1700","earliest":"1695-01-01","latest":"1704-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dr W.L.
