Giovanni in Laterano in Rome. Twelve such reliefs were commissioned from Allessandro Algardi as part of Borromini's reconstruction of the interior of the Basilica begun in 1646. The reliefs were executed in stucco between 1646 and 1653, not, in the event, by Algardi himself, but by his pupils. Among these pupils was Michel Anguier, who according to recently-discovered documents, was responsible for the reliefs depicting the 'Flood' and the 'Crucifixion. These are his earliest known works. After his early training in Rome Anguier returned to France to become one of the leading French sculptors of the second half of the seventeenth century.","physicalDescription":"The Crucified Christ in the centre is flanked by a Roman centurion (perhaps Longinus) on horseback on his right, and the sorrowing Virgin behind two other figures, on his left. The Magdalene kneels at the foot of the cross and in the background are the two crucified thieves. The faces of five further figures are sketched in behind the crosses. Some of the figures have apparently been cast and applied to the modelled ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Anguier, Michel","id":"A6119"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"x43862"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"terracotta","id":"AAT10669"}],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Terracotta relief","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AT0695"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES395140"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Relief","id":""}],[{"text":"Sketch model","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1646-1650","earliest":"1646-01-01","latest":"1650-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.68","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"3.49","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by Elizabeth Wilson & John Winter, Sotheby's and Dr. Jennifer Montagu, Warburg Institute in 1980.\n\nHistorical significance: The companion piece of the 'Flood' was bought at the same sale at Sotheby's by the Metropolitan Museum, New York.","historicalContext":"This is a sketch model for one of the stucco reliefs in the nave of the Basilica of S.
