The Virgin, who looks forward, is seated and wears a belted gown and a veil over her head which he holds at the neck with her left hand. \r\n\r\nThis devotional scene, representing 'Our Lady of Pity' does not occur in the gospel accouns but developed in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries to become and popular and powerful image throughout Western Europe. Many alabaster figures and panels were designed as parts of larger altarpieces, but a carving such as this would have been an individual devotional piece in its own right.","physicalDescription":"Alabaster group. The dead Christ lies left to right across the Virgin's lap. His head is supported by her right hand, his hands are crossed and his legs hang down at right angles. The Virgin, who looks forward, is seated and wears a belted gown and a veil over her heads hwich she holds at the neck with her left hand, looped over her thumb and finger. The eyelids of the Virgin and Christ are carved. Traces of green paint and the usual daisy pattern remain on the ground on the left and right of the carving. There are traces of red on the inside of the Virgin's cloak and a brownish colour on her hair. There is some green paint on Christ's torse.
