On acquisition it was described as a leaf of a diptych. It is divided horizontally and carverd with two scenes, the top representing the Coronation of the Virgin and the bottom depicting the Virgin and Child. The place of origin of this unusual panel is enigmatic, although a date at the beginning of the fourteenth century seems likely. \r\nThe Gothic Triptych was to all intents and purposes a sub-branch of the tabernacle polyptych, with a shallower central panel and two, rather than four, hinged wings. The subject matter was the same, dominated by single images of the standing Virgin and Child and scenes from the infancy of Christ. Triptychs – like diptychs – are better suited to the needs of a travelling clientele, who would wish to take these small portable altars with them as aids to prayer. Some of them were intended to be carried in cases, usually of cuir bouilli (boiled leather).","physicalDescription":"Divided horizontally and carved with two scenes with a plain moulded band. The top represents the Coronation of the Virgin with a kneeling angel on each side and a further angel flying out of the clouds above to place the crown on the Virgin's head. At the bottom is the Virgin and Child. BY ananlogy with other triptychs and tabernacle-polyptychs showing in the centre the Virgin and Child below and the Coronation of the Virgin above, it may be suggested that the other scenes on the wings would have been the Annunciation (upper left), the Nativity (upper right) and the Presentation in the Temple (lower right).
