The present relief was undoubtedly made as part of a general scheme of decoration; its great size and the rather crude painting of the eyes suggest that it must have been set at some distance from the ground. The developed mannerist style evident in the head would be consistent with a dating towards the middle of the 16th century.","physicalDescription":"Relief shows a female head in full face with braided hat fastened in the centre by a jewel. The dress is blue with a green collar, and the white under-dress beneath has a rope-work collar terminating in two-cords. The eyes, which are wide open, are pigmented in purplish black.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"terracotta","id":"AAT10669"}],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"},{"text":"enamelling","id":"x37485"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Relief in polychromed enamelled terracotta","categories":[{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Reliefs","id":"THES49035"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2018KY5279"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES398233"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Relief","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"first half of 16th century","earliest":"1500-01-01","latest":"1550-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"66.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by Mr. Alfred Spero.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Relief, terracotta enamelled, Italian (Florence), first half of 16th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Pope-Hennessy, John. <u>Catalogue of Italian Sculpture in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
