The work received widespread critical acclaim and was one of the most celebrated sights in the Eternal City during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It remained in the Montalto garden until 1786, when it was sold to the British art dealer, Thomas Jenkins.\r\nIn classical mythology Neptune ruled over the seas and its inhabitants. His son Triton was half man, half fish (a merman).","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Bernini, Gian Lorenzo","id":"A8146"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"x43862"},"note":"based on Bernini's Neptune and Triton"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Myths & Legends","id":"THES49005"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2019ME3160","2019ME3161","2018KT6763"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CNSN","id":"THES49202"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"middle of 17th century","earliest":"1625-01-01","latest":"1675-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"54","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"To top of head","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"64","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"To top of trident","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"28.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This object was purchased by the John Webb Trust and bequeathed to the V&A in 1953.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Statuette, bronze, Neptune and Triton, based on Bernini, Italian (Rome), middle of 17th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"<i>The Rival of Nature : Renaissance painting in its context</i>, London : National Gallery, 1975","id":"AUTH354465"},"details":"212","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Neptune","id":"N224"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"trident","id":"x31765"},{"text":"fish","id":"x30068"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["A.42-1953"],"accessionNumberNum":"42","accessionNumberPrefix":"A","accessionYear":1953,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2025PF8667","2025PF8666","2025PF8665","2025PF8785","2025PF8784","2025PF8783"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-09-10","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":false}}
