He was celebrated for his astonishing ability to produce 'living' marble sculpture. Bernini produced a series of dramatic over-life-size sculptures for Cardinal Scipione Borghese, including Pluto and Proserpine, Apollo and Daphne and David. One of Bernini's greatest works is the Cornaro Chapel in Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome, which houses the famous Ecstacy of St Theresa. Bernini was patronised by a succession of popes and worked extensively at St Peter's Basilica, where he created the baldacchino (canopy), Cathedra Petri and two papal tombs, as well as designing St Peter's Square with its colonnades, and the great ceremonial staircase to the Vatican Palace.","physicalDescription":"The base of the bust is curved, and is cut off above the left elbow and through the right upper arm. The Saint wears a chasuble and wide foliated orphrey which joins in a double foliated strip in front. Beneath is a pleated alb with a lace collar, and above this is the loose collar of the amice. The Saint's head is inclined slightly to his left, with parted lips and eyes upturned. The bust is moulded in one with its small rectangular base and is hollowed out at the back.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bernini, Gian Lorenzo","id":"A8146"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"x43862"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"terracotta","id":"AAT10669"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Terracotta","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2018KY8769","2018KY8772","2014GX4703","2018KY8771","2018KY8743"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES383974"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"TCRPS (VA)","id":"THES49504"},"free":"","case":"C1","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bust","id":""}],[{"text":"Bust St Philip Neri fragments","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1625","earliest":"1620-01-01","latest":"1629-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"67.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased in London at the Arcade Gallery, for £1,200, in 1960.
