In 1504 he was sent to Rome by King Henry VII to invest Duke Guidobaldo da Montefeltro of Urbino into the Order. He is known here wearing an unidentified (damaged) chain of office. The bust is closely related to the work of the Italian sculptor Pietro Torrigiani. It is likely that it was made in Torrigiano's workshop or by a close follower. Like the bust of Henry VII, this too may be based on a cast either made from life or from a death mask.","physicalDescription":"Bust in terracotta of Sir Gilbert Talbot looking to his front wearing a round hat with a flap at the beck, a cloak with a fur collar and edgeing at the front and a chain of office round his neck.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Torrigiano, Pietro","id":"A8924"},"association":{"text":"sculptors","id":"AAT25181"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"terracotta","id":"AAT10669"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[{"text":"Anglo-Italian","id":"x45507"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2015HW9020","2015HW9022","2015HW9023","2015HW9026","2015HW9027","2017JT7535","2017JT7970","2017JU6244"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES383954"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bust Sir Gilbert Talbot","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"early 16th century","earliest":"1500-01-01","latest":"1550-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"44","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bust Sir Gilbert Talbot, terracotta English 16th century.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Whinney, Margaret, Sculpture in Britain 1530-1830. 2nd ed.
