Ivory crucifix figures, undoubtedly once numerous, are now relatively rare. Despite the paucity of other examples, a date in the first quarter of the 14th century, perhaps around 1320, can be arrived at by comparison with a figure mounted on a silver and rock-crystal cross now in the Prado in Madrid. The present figure might have been mounted on an altar cross, but may have formed the central part of an ivory retable devoted to the Passion of Christ. ","physicalDescription":"Christ on the cross with a rope wreath, the head leans towards his right. Broken away below the knees, the arms missing. The back of the scultprue is flat and uncarved, with a dense network of cross-hatching to aid adhesion to a separately-made cross.
