The tomb was designed by the architect Mattia de' Rossi. The Pope in the centre, represented seated, was executed by Ercole Ferrata. On his sides are two females allegories, of Benignity carved by Lazzaro Morelli, and this figure of Clemency by Mazzuoli. The tomb was commissioned by Cardinal Paluzzo Altrieri, and the contracts with the artists signed between September and Otctober 1682 (Schiavo 1964, pp. 16, 189-190).
