The series is illustrating the history of British Art. The medals, which were specially commissioned, were issued annually to members of the Art-Union.\r\nThe sitter Sir John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) was a dramatist, architect and herald. He brought the English Baroque style to its culmination in Blenheim Palace, a country house in Oxfordshire. He brought out many dramatic pieces, which were very successful.\r\nThe medal is made by Benjamin Wyon. Wyon is the name of a talented family of Designers, die-engravers and medallists whose period of activity extended from before the middle of the 18th century to almost the end of the 19th century.","physicalDescription":"Obverse: Draped bust of Sir John Vanbrugh.
