The total number struck was nearly 8,000. It commemorates the signing of the Armistice and portrays the Cenotaph- a huge monlithic stone slab topped nu the representation of a coffin in stone- the national memorial to the dead on Whitehall. The Cenotaph (the greek word for empty tomb) was designed by Lutyens and had been unveiled by King George V as part of the funeral procession of the Unknown soldier on 11 November 1920.","physicalDescription":"Armistice medal, bronze. Obverse: Britannia, her helmet adorned with laurels, holds a mace-like staff and supports the figure of a dead soldier. He is naked except for a loin cloth. His head is bound, his eyes shut and he holds a victor's laurel wreath. Broken fetters hang from his wrists. Behind the figure is a rising sun. Signed: C.L.D.
