It is carved with groups of figures in costume of the 15th century. It is made in Italy, possibly Venice, in about 1410-1430 with later additions, or in the middle of the fifteenth century. \n\nThe casket is an example of a very numerous type, rather coarsely executed, which depcits pairs of figures rather than a narrative. In the past this casket has been thought to be by the workshop of the Embriachi, but this group is hardly stylistically coherent, however, and it seems likely that the casket is the work of several different workshops.\r\n","physicalDescription":"This casket consists of a box and cover, with bone or ivory plaques of different widths, with only a slight curvature. It is carved with groups of figures in costume of the 15th century. On the lid are flying winged amorini, those on the long side holding blank shields. The lid is further enlivened with applied intarsia decoration, which has been prefabricated, cut to size and then affixed. \r\nThe plaques represent pairs of male and female figures in conversation, and the front and back faces also feature smaller plaques depicting a single male figure. On the corner are figures holding shields and large clubs.
