Educated in Rome, he was patronized by Cardinal Cornaro, by the Papal court and later by Gonzago of Mantua and the Medici. In 1600, he was appointed gentleman at the court of Grand-Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici in Florence. The position carried a stipend, but no obligation of residence, and in his later life Chiabrera preferred to live largely in his native Savona, making occasional visits to Florence. His major work, the \"Rapimento di Cefalo\" written for the marriage by proxy of Maria de' Medici to Henry IV of France in Florence in 1600 was set to music by Giulio Caccini, the father of the sculptor who made this bust, Pompeo Caccini. \r\nThis sensitive portrait bust (of which another cast exist in private collection) depicts the poet at the age of 72, its small scale suggests a personal commission or a gift on the part of the artist, who proudly signed it on the back, and could have been kept within a studio or cabinet. This is the only sculpture known by Pompeo Caccini who is otherwise documented as a painter in Florence, active from 1601-1615. Pompeo was also the nephew of the sculptor Giovanni Battista Caccini (1556-1613) with whom he may have worked. \r\nAn engraved portrait by an anonymous engraver, after a design by Pompeo Caccini is also dated 1624 and the iconographical similarities between the bronze bust and the print are so close that they must be related. The bust may have been modelled when Chiabrera was in Florence in 1624, or perhaps when Caccini visited Rome . ","physicalDescription":"The bust bears at the front on a scrolled cartouche beneath the truncation a cast inscription cut in the wax Gabriello/Chiabera, and at the back in dotted characters worked with a point in the bronze another inscription 'PON (sic)PEO CACCINI / Fe A: 1624'. The doublet and cape are worked all over in the wax with a point. An integrally-cast tang springing from behind the cartouche has an original thread on the outside and a modern thread inside to attach the bust to its socle; the present waisted socle of green breccia marble is a modern replacement.
