The coat of arms in the wreath (which would have been at the center of the lintel) is that of Stefano Trenta, Bishop of Lucca from 1448 until 1477. A distinguished diplomat and at one time Nuncio (papal ambassador) from Pope Paul II to King Edward IV of England, Stefano Trenta is recorded as having enlarged the Archbishop's Palace in Lucca between about 1470 and 1477. The style of carving suggests a follower of Francesco Simone di Ferrucci (1437-1493) of Fiesole, near Florence. There are a number of sculptures by the same hand in and around the Archbishop's Palace.","physicalDescription":"This is a fragment of a frieze in relief. On the left is a wreath enclosing a shield charged with the arms of Trenta (three bulls, heads caboshed en face, 2, 1 surmounted by a mitre) supported by a flying putto. To the right is a brazier garlanded with fruit and leaves.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"by a follower of Francesco di Simone"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"sandstone","id":"AAT11376"}],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Grey Sandstone (pietra serena) in relief","categories":[{"text":"Reliefs","id":"THES49035"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2017JX8514","2017KB2044"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES398321"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Frieze (of fireplace)","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Lucca","id":"x37089"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1475-1480","earliest":"1470-01-01","latest":"1480-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"38.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"150.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought probably in Florence as Italian, 17th century, vendor and price not recorded.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Fragment of a frieze from a fireplace, sandstone (pietra serena), by a follower of Francesco di Simone, Italy (Lucca), ca. 1475-1480","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Inventory of Art Objects Acquired in the Year 1861. <u>In</u>: <u>Inventory of the Objects in the Art Division of the Museum at South Kensington, Arranged According to the Dates of their Acquisition.
