He is associated with the court of Rudolf II in Prague, to which he brought the Mannerist court style of Giambologna of Florence. He also collaborated with Giambologna in Florence. His first own work is an over life-size group of Mercury and the Psyche (now Louvre) for Rudolf II.\r\nThe legend of the beautiful Psyche is written by Lucius Apuleius in the <i>Metamorphoses</i>, or <i>Golden Ass</i>. In the tale Mercury (a messenger of the gods) is sent by Jupiter to bring her back up to heaven to reunite her with her lover Cupid.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Vries, Adriaen de","id":"A6603"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"x43862"},"note":"workshop of"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Myths & Legends","id":"THES49005"},{"text":"Bronze","id":"THES49033"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2018KT9774","2018KT9775"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES395936"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"TCRPS (VA)","id":"THES49504"},"free":"","case":"C1","shelf":"1","box":"3"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":""}],[{"text":"Fragment","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Netherlands","id":"x29020"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1600","earliest":"1595-01-01","latest":"1604-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"57.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"12.06","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"30/07/2015","earliest":"2015-07-30","latest":"2015-07-30"},"part":"Whole object with base","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Statuette, bronze, Mercury and Psyche, by the workshop of Adriaen de Vries, Netherlands, ca. 1600","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Mercury","id":"N167"},{"text":"Psyche","id":"N211"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["A.16:1-1952","A.16:2-1952"],"accessionNumberNum":"16","accessionNumberPrefix":"A","accessionYear":1952,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Statuette","Fragment"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-09-22","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":false}}
