After Calcagni's death in 1593 Vergelli became the leader of the Recanatese school. It is by comparison with Vergelli's works for the Holy House and for the bronze font in the Basilica at Loreto that the present statue has been attributed to him. Almost all the sculptures from the Recanati workshop are in their original locations and this is the only statuette from the school in a museum.","physicalDescription":"Group, bronze. The Virgin, heavily draped, holds the naked Christ Child in her right hand, his left foot supported on her drapery. Both these figures look down at the St John; the Virgin's left hand stretches out towards him as he looks at her and clutches her drapery. The St John is cast in the round, but the Virgin and Child group has a hollowed back with a supporting strut. The group was originally set in a niche and it is quite likely the damage was caused by the sculpture being wrenched from its position.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Vergelli, Tiburzio","id":"A34455"},"association":{"text":"attributed to","id":"THES286691"},"note":"maker"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AC5600"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"117","id":"THES49906"},"free":"","case":"3","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"117","id":"THES49906"},"free":"","case":"3","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":""}],[{"text":"Statuette","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"late 16th century","earliest":"1550-01-01","latest":"1600-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with Art Fund support, and the assistance of the Murray Bequest and the Bryan Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"56.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Virgin Mary","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"26.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"St John","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased with funds from the Murray Bequest, the Bryan Bequest and the National Art Collections Fund from David Peel.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Statuette, bronze, Virgin and Child with Infant St John, attributed to Tiburzio Vergelli, Italy, 1600.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"National Art Collections Fund Report, 1974, p. 11"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Radcliffe, Anthony.
