He moved to Paris in about 1851 as overseer for the Dumas stove and tile firm, and in 1855 opened his own studio and, later his own retail shop, with his brother Xavier. He invited many well-known painters of the day to design decorations and also to paint some wares directly. This dish, by Emil Auguste Reiber (1826-1893) is such an example. Deck specialised in researching glazes and colours, inspired by the ceramics of the Middle and Far East. In 1887, only three years before his death, he became Director of the National Manufactory at Sèvres.","physicalDescription":"Tazza or footed plateau,  moulded and painted in colours, in the centre opf the bowl a half length female figure holding a daisy with the inscription 'A la belle Marguerite' and round the foot 'sois toujours la confidante de nos amours a Marguerite'.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Deck, Joseph-Théodore","id":"A2115"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Reiber, Emil Auguste","id":"A30777"},"association":{"text":"painter","id":"AAT25136"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulded","id":"AAT53134"},{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, moulded and painted in enamels","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2010EC6364","2010EL6430"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"139 (VA)","id":"THES49874"},"free":"","case":"38","shelf":"6","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Plateau on foot","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1866-1867","earliest":"1866-01-01","latest":"1867-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"39","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"25.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'TD E.Reiber 3 Avril 1866'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Incised in bowl"},{"content":"'TH.Deck.1867'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Painted under foot"}],"objectHistory":"Shown in the international exhibition, Paris, 1867 and bought from the maker, M. Deck, born in Guebwiller, south of Sélestat, was also from Alsace and this may have contributed to his successful collaboration with the painter.  Local artists were very much caught up in the political rivalries in the run-up to the war.","briefDescription":"Plateau on foot, earthenware, moulded and painted in enamels; made by Joseph-Théodore Deck, painted by Emil Auguste Reiber, Paris, France, 1866-67","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"flowers","id":"x35571"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["704-1869"],"accessionNumberNum":"704","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1869,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-06","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":false}}
