At the time it was made Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann was a leading designer. Like Ruhlmann's furniture, it uses very rare materials, including shagreen (sharkskin) and ebony veneer. The handles and decorative stringing are made of ivory and even the carcase of the dressing table is made of expensive mahogany. The elegant shape is similar to Art Deco furniture from Paris and, to a lesser extent, to the French furniture in the neo-classical style made during the period 1770-1800 that influenced designers like Ruhlmann.\n\nThe design is probably by J.F. Johnson, who was designing furniture for Heal & Sons at the time. The London firm is more usually associated with the Arts and Crafts style, and this cabinet shows that it was keeping abreast of fashion in the 1920s.\n\nThe set of bedroom furniture, of which this forms part, was made for the author Dodie Smith.","physicalDescription":"Mahogany cabinet with a pair of doors above three drawers, veneered with ebony and shagreen, with ivory handles and stringing","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Johnson, J.F","id":"A14942"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":"probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Heal & Son Ltd","id":"A3033"},"association":{"text":"retailers","id":"AAT25246"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"mahogany","id":"AAT12221"},{"text":"ebony","id":"AAT12055"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"veneering","id":"AAT53878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"020","id":"THES302823"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cabinet","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"key","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1926-1927","earliest":"1926-01-01","latest":"1927-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"w.4:1-1975","id":"O113662"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"w.5-1975","id":"O113677"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"w.6:1-1975","id":"O113729"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"w.8:1-1975","id":"O297255"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"w.12:1-1975","id":"O322031"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"w.13-1975","id":"O372004"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"138","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"78.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"53","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"including handles","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"CW / LW 7.1.10","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Made for the author Dodie Smith","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cabinet , probably designed by J.F.
