It was installed in 1997.  The letters and number EH 9681 refer to the  code given by the Sheffield steel mill at the point of manufacture. The commission was part of a larger project; the conversion of the former Royal College of Art Studios into new conservation  studios, Museum offices and staff restaurant.\n\n'The abstract design is intended to look as if it is a huge drawing standing firmly within its environment- static but filled with suggestive movement.'  Wendy Ramshaw, Crafts Magazine Jan- Feb 1998\n\n'All the wonderful objects in this marvellous museum make the task of designing any work which is to become a part of the structure of the building a very considerable undertaking. I based the drawing for the screen on an animated sketch I had once made for a brooch. The lines within the frame of the screen still retain a sense of movement, further emphasised as you walk past'. Wendy Ramshaw, a jeweller of international reputation and whom had also worked on large scale commissions was approached, was approached and the design, expressed in this model, was approved by the Museum in 1996. Construction took place in 1997 and the finished double screen which measured 3 x 4 metres was installed in September of that year. The fretwork nature of the design was achieved using a revolutionary cutting technique which involved high pressure water jets firing fine particules of grit at the steel sheet. The name EH9681 refers to the batch numberof te sheet when it arrived at the foundry for cutting.","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["M.85-1997"],"accessionNumberNum":"85","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1997,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"RF number","id":"THES57673"},"number":"1997/1522"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-01","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":false}}
