The shirt itself is made by a company called Ecosport from organic colour-grown cotton. Ecosport purposefully tried to eliminate as many chemicals as possible from their garment manufacture and the process of growing cotton. With colour-growing, cotton is purposefully grown by its natural colours, so that when the fibres are harvested, spun and woven, light hues are together and dark ones are together. This eliminates the need for bleaching/dyeing, washing and chemical treatments that standard T-shirts normally need. Non-chemically treated cotton naturally darkens with wearing, laundering, and time, which means that a well-worn shirt will develop a deep mellow creamy-brown tone. According to the World Wildlife Fund, organic cotton shirts use 71% less water in their manufacturing process than the average T-shirt, which requires 2700 litres of water.\n\nThis shirt formed part of a large collection of T-shirts collected by Richard L. Velleman, including many band shirts from his favourite rock and punk groups alongside shirts with skateboarding, surfing, partying and LGBTQ+ themes as well as random amusing or funny shirts. This shirt has a bit more of a serious message, but is still representative of the issues that Velleman wished to raise awareness of.\n\nWe do not know who Richard Velleman was or anything about him beyond that he collected and wore these shirts, many of which show clear signs of having formed part of an actively and enthusiastically worn wardrobe; and that the collection of shirts was donated to us in his memory after he died in 1994 or 1995. The choice of T-shirts is often deeply personal and subject to the wearer's individual taste, acting as a wearable billboard for their beliefs, tastes and other opinions.","physicalDescription":"Organic cotton T-shirt printed with 'It's Getting Hot in Here' on the front and 'Greenpeace' on the back.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Greenpeace","id":"A18446"},"association":{"text":"printers","id":"x31107"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Ecosport","id":"AUTH407638"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printed cotton","categories":[{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2014HD8266","2014HD8259","2014HD8252"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES404960"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"T-shirt","id":"AAT209903"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"USA","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c.1990","earliest":"1985-01-01","latest":"1994-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Donated by Andrew Shanahan in memory of Richard L.
