The upper part consists of a rectangle mirror hinged at the top and a similarly hinged round magnifying lens in a square frame both suspended from two turned uprights. The frames of the mirror and the magnifying lens are both inlaid near the edge with a cheque pattern and are hinged in such a way that the lens can be placed either in the front of or behind the mirror. The lower part consists of a circular lead - weighted and moulded base inlaid with a band of cheque pattern and a vertical shaft moulded and with spital carving on a cup shaped member near the base. In his letter to the department (minute on RF 53/2957) he noted that a paper by him on these objects was to be published in <i>Annals of Science</i> in the following year.
