This was one of a pair of chimneypieces made for the Gallery or Ballroom at Northumberland House.\r\n\r\nThe designer Garret had been commissioned by Algernon Seymour, 7th Duke of Somerset (1684-1750) in 1748 to assist with the re-design of Northumberland House, main element of which was the addition of a new wing to house a Gallery.\r\nThere is a painting by Francis Hayman of 1760, showing Benjamin Carter (rather than Joseph Wilton to whom the piece was formerly ascribed) with his family and a design for this work on his easel.\r\n\r\nIts twin is now installed in the Billiard Room at Syon House, Middlesex. The destruction of the House was reported in the <i>Illustrated London News</i> in 1874, 5. The house and site were purchased by the Metropolitan Board of Works from the Duke of Northumberland and his son Earl Percy, under a special Act of Parliament, for £500,000. Its intended demolition was 'for the purpose of making a new street from Charing Cross to the Victoria Thames Embankment'.
