The head of Christ is supported by St. John the Evangelist, kneeling on the left on his right knee, and gazing outwards at the spectator. On the right St. Mary Magdalen, with right hand on her breast, gazes downwards at the feet of Christ which she supports on her left palm.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"terracotta","id":"AAT10669"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Terracotta","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AB8128","2015HX4149"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"A","id":"THES397245"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"M","id":"THES397259"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"M","id":"THES397259"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"TCRPS (VA)","id":"THES49504"},"free":"","case":"C1","shelf":"1","box":"4"},{"current":{"text":"TCRPS (VA)","id":"THES49504"},"free":"","case":"C1","shelf":"1","box":"4"},{"current":{"text":"TCRPS (VA)","id":"THES49504"},"free":"","case":"C1","shelf":"1","box":"4"},{"current":{"text":"TCRPS (VA)","id":"THES49504"},"free":"","case":"C1","shelf":"1","box":"4"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Group","id":""}],[{"text":"Figure","id":""}],[{"text":"Figure","id":""}],[{"text":"Fragment","id":""}],[{"text":"Fragment","id":""}],[{"text":"Fragment","id":""}],[{"text":"Fragments","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1495-1500","earliest":"1490-01-01","latest":"1500-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"101.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"at maximum point","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased in Florence (Gagliardi, £150).","historicalContext":"The group is related to one with the same subject formerly in the Staatliche Museen, Berlin. The closest analogy for the particular composition in painting is in a Lamentation by Perugino in the Accademia, Florence (ca. 1493).","briefDescription":"Group, terracotta, the Lamentation over the Dead Christ (Pietà), Italy (Florence), ca.1495-1500","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Maclagan, Eric and Longhurst, Margaret H. <u>Catalogue of Italian Sculpture.
