The house was re-built around 1660 and destroyed by fire in 1662. The Gateway was bought by Sir Paul Makins Bt. in 1924 with the intention of presenting it to the Museum. The gateway was at that time the entrance to a farmhouse. Given to the Museum by Sir Paul Makins in 1925.
