He is one of a few young glass makers associated with the Rietveld Akademie in Amsterdam, working in a surreal and provocative style. Williams combines glass with other media to create highly personal 'sculptures'. The other main strand in Gareth Williams' work is wheel engraving, which can be seen in <i>Squeak, squeak</i>.\n\nGareth Williams blows simple cylindrical bowls and vases in coloured glass, cased with a layer of coloured glass. Through this he engraves astutely observed, stylised depictions of animals. Squeak, squeak is a large cylindrical vessel with a pale pink overlay on the inside. Through this the picture of a rat with a long tail is engraved on the inside of the vessel.\n\nSqueak, squeak was produced in a limited edition of five, and it was entered for the Coburger Glaspreis 2006, where it received the prize for engraving. Not many contemporary makers have embraced the historic technique of wheel-engraving and the work of Gareth Williams is a refreshing exception.\n\n","physicalDescription":"Cylindrical glass bowl form with internal pink overlay that is wheel-engraved with a rat","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Gareth Noel Williams","id":"A16988"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"wheel engraved","id":"AAT53831"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wheel engraved","categories":[{"text":"Glass","id":"THES48946"},{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2011EV3937"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"129","id":"THES49886"},"free":"","case":"7","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vessel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Amsterdam","id":"x28722"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2005","earliest":"2005-01-01","latest":"2005-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Anonymous gift.","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Squeak, squeak', cylindrical, glass with internal pink overlay, wheel-engraved with a rat, limited edition 5/5, Gareth Noel Williams, Amsterdam, 2005","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Gareth Noel Williams (born 1970)\r\nSqueak, Squeak \r\n2005 (made 2006)\r\n\r\nGareth Williams is one of few contemporary makers to use the historic technique of wheel-engraving in an exciting and refreshing manner.
