At the time it was made Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann was a leading designer. Like Ruhlmann's furniture, it uses very rare materials, including shagreen (sharkskin) and ebony veneer. The handles and decorative stringing are made of ivory and even the carcase of the wardrobe is made of expensive mahogany. The wardrobe echoes ideas of Art Deco furniture from Paris. \r\n\r\nThe design is probably by J.F. Johnson, who was designing furniture for Heal & Sons at the time. The London firm is more usually associated with the Arts and Crafts style, and this wardrobe shows that it was keeping abreast of fashion in the 1920s.\r\n\r\nThe set of bedroom furniture, of which this forms part, was made for the author Dodie Smith.","physicalDescription":"Wardrobe in three sections, made of mahogany and veneered with ebony and shagreen, with ivory handles and stringing","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Johnson, J.F.","id":"A14942"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":"probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Heal & Son Ltd","id":"A3033"},"association":{"text":"retailers","id":"AAT25246"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"mahogany","id":"AAT12221"},{"text":"ebony","id":"AAT12055"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"veneering","id":"AAT53878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AL1514"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES344505"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"020","id":"THES302823"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Wardrobe","id":""}],[{"text":"Wardrobe","id":""}],[{"text":"Wardrobe","id":""}],[{"text":"Wardrobe base","id":""}],[{"text":"Shelf","id":""}],[{"text":"Shelf","id":""}],[{"text":"Shelf","id":""}],[{"text":"Shelf","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Shelf","id":""}],[{"text":"Shelf","id":""}],[{"text":"keys","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1926-1927","earliest":"1926-01-01","latest":"1927-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"w.12:1-1975","id":"O322031"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"w.13-1975","id":"O372004"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"w.9-1975","id":"O371711"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"173.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/05/2025","earliest":"2025-05-19","latest":"2025-05-19"},"part":"W.8:1, 3-1975","note":"height is approximate"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"56.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/05/2025","earliest":"2025-05-19","latest":"2025-05-19"},"part":"W.8:1, 3-1975","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"52.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/05/2025","earliest":"2025-05-19","latest":"2025-05-19"},"part":"W.8:1, 3-1975","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"177","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/05/2025","earliest":"2025-05-19","latest":"2025-05-19"},"part":"W.8:2-1975","note":"height is approximate"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"70.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/05/2025","earliest":"2025-05-19","latest":"2025-05-19"},"part":"W.8:2-1975","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"55.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/05/2025","earliest":"2025-05-19","latest":"2025-05-19"},"part":"W.8:2-1975","note":"measurement is approximate"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Made for the author Dodie Smith","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Wardrobe, probably designed by J.F.
