This pieces may be compared with No. 7224 '60.\""},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Maya Corry; Deborah Howard; Mary Laven, <i>Madonnas and Miracles: The Holy Home in Renaissance Italy</i> (Philip Wilson Publishers and the Fitzwilliam Museum 2017), fig. 39, p.107, p. 182\n\nAs a result of the preaching of Bernardino of Siena and of his followers, the Monogram of the Name of Jesus moved from the <i>piazze</i> and parishes and entered the Italian Renaissance home. Bernardino implored his audience to adorn their domestic spaces with the Sacred Monogram saying: 'Therefore I beg you, for Christ's Honour and His Reverence, keep it in your homes, at the threshold and also at the doorway of your rooms'. [note 3] The success of this prescription is made clear by the extant material evidence which illustrates how the Sacred Monogram's popularity as both a devotional symbol and as a protective device increased in the decades following Bernardino's preaching. Like the doorway in Carpaccio's painting, many surviving Italian Renaissance domestic thresholds bear the Sacred Monogram... Household objects adorned with the symbol also proliferated... Larger household objects, for example furniture, might also incorporate the Monogram into their decorative scheme, as does a popular style of <i>cassone</i> (chest) from the Veneto decorated with intricate geometric patterns (fig. 39). Linked to the ritual of marriage, the cassone, inlaid with a design of various luxury woods and bone, functioned as an object of daily entertainment, with a chessboard decorating the top.
