This work was a response to the artist's mother's suffering from Alzheimer's disease. The knotted border evokes the gesture of twisting hair while lost in thought. Instead of cotton or wool, 'Memoriam' is wadded with wire, deliberately undermining the quilt's traditional associations with safety and comfort. \r\n\r\nIn the study for 'Memoriam', Walker included a screen printed imate of her mother's wedding veil, looped and stitched to reference the universal remembrance ribbons which started with AIDS awareness. Juxtaposed with 'Memoriam', the study is a poignant reminder of both the hopes and fears of a young bride at the start of her married life.\r\n\r\nMichele Walker creates multi-layered quilts that unite personal testimony with social commentary. She was one of a small group of contemporary artists who helped to revive an interest in British quilt making in the 1970s and 1980s. Her interest in the tradition includes not only techniques, but also a fascination with the often unknown women who produced quilts; objects which are on the whole unsigned, undated and undocumented, but often retain within them a fading collective or personal memory.","physicalDescription":"Quilt of steel wire wool and transparent plastic. Pieced in a 'crazy' pattern, in which irregularly shaped pieces of plastic are randomly stitched together. The patchwork is additionally stitched with an imprint of the artist's skin and wadded with cotton. The quilt is backed with cotton and embrellished with twisted steel wire wool fringing.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Walker, Michele","id":"A37003"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"plastic","id":"AAT14570"},{"text":"steel wool","id":"AAT11062"},{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[{"text":"piecing","id":"AAT231250"},{"text":"quilting","id":"AAT53656"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Quilted plastic and steel wire wool","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2009CC8353","2019LL2898","2019LL2899","2019LL2900","2019LL2901"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"T6","id":"THES50141"},"free":"","case":"MB73","shelf":"B3","box":"RO1288"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Quilt","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Brighton","id":"x31136"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2002","earliest":"2002-01-01","latest":"2002-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"250","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"140","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"4","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"14/10/2013","earliest":"2013-10-14","latest":"2013-10-14"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"1090","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/02/2019","earliest":"2019-02-08","latest":"2019-02-08"},"part":"Top edge","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"1220","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/02/2019","earliest":"2019-02-08","latest":"2019-02-08"},"part":"Bottom edge","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"2320","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/02/2019","earliest":"2019-02-08","latest":"2019-02-08"},"part":"Proper right","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"2270","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/02/2019","earliest":"2019-02-08","latest":"2019-02-08"},"part":"Proper left","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"10.5","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/02/2019","earliest":"2019-02-08","latest":"2019-02-08"},"part":"Weighed on roller","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Weight excluding roller","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Memoriam', transparent plastic and steel wire wool quilt designed and made by Michele Walker, British, 2002","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Sue Prichard (ed.), Quilts, 1700-2010 : hidden histories, untold stories, London: V&A, 2010","id":"AUTH354377"},"details":"69","free":"Sue Prichard, 'Negotiating space: fabric and the feminine 1945-2010', in Sue Prichard (ed.), Quilts 1700-2010 (London: V&A, 2010) p.142"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Sue Prichard, 'Keepsakes of identity - Michele Walker: Memoriam' V&A Online Journal 1 (Autumn 2008)"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Memoriam\r\nMichele Walker (born 1947), Brighton\r\n2002\r\n\r\nWalker reflects on the terrifying fragmentation of personal identity that occurs with memory loss.
