Saggars protected the pottery from direct contact with the flames and enabled the kiln to be stacked efficiently. Some of his larger and more thickly potted stonewares were fired open to the kiln’s atmosphere. They were balanced on circular spacers set on covered saggars like this one, and placed at the top of the kiln.","physicalDescription":"Circular saggar cover, broken and with missing portion, the upper face with fused kiln spacers","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"John Dwight's Fulham Pottery","id":"A1555"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stoneware","id":"x30197"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stoneware, salt-glazed","categories":[{"text":"Stoneware","id":"THES48890"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2009CP3962","2014HH3081","2014HH3082","2015HW0017"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"143 (VA)","id":"THES49867"},"free":"","case":"22","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Saggar cover","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1680-1700","earliest":"1675-01-01","latest":"1700-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"‘Lent by London Museum’ \r\n\r\nPlease note that the legal name remains Museum of London but the Lender would like to be credited and known as \"London Museum\"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"14","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx.","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Excavated on the site of John Dwight's Fulham Pottery","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Fireclay, with three disc separators fused to the top, Fulham Pottery, London, 17th century.
