Purnell","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Mme Stéphane was a beadwork and fashion accessories atelier founded in London in the mid-1900s by Madeleine Marguerite Perrier and, apparently, Martial of the Paris couture house Martial et Armand with which Perrier was closely associated. In 1909, Perrier bought out Martial's stake in Mme Stéphane and became the sole proprietor of the establishment. She patented her beadwork techniques, including a technique for making beaded chokers and collars such as those famously worn by Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary who were two of her most significant customers. The costs of Mme Stéphane beaded chokers averaged about 10 guineas for a choker, some as high as 12 or 15 gns, while ribbon bands were 2.5 to 3 gns. Steel beads were expensive. From 1909 to 1922, Mme Stéphane was based at 37 New Bond Street, then moved in 1922 to 99 New Bond Street. After 1928, she moved to 41A Madox Street and eventualy to Welbeck Street.
