The band, which is probably an\r\napparel from a liturgical vestment, is made up\r\nof two parts; it has cut and torn edges, most of\r\nthem hemmed. The fragment has a cut across\r\nthe middle, later crudely sewn up. On the band,\r\nplant ornaments alternate with a stag and its kid,\r\nan eagle and two other birds. Such forms are\r\nalso found on a second band in the V&A collection\r\n(mus. no. 8240a-1863), embroidered with\r\ngriffins, an eagle and a lion, and in goldsmiths’\r\nwork and bindings from the late 12th century.\r\nThe metal threads have two different shades of\r\nsilk core – light beige and ochre – which may\r\nsuggest that they were originally silver and\r\nsilver-gilt, though the metal strips have corroded\r\nto unvarying dark grey.\r\nThe band’s surface-couched embroidery\r\ndiffers in technique and style from the fragment,\r\nwhich depicts a slender standing figure,\r\nunderside-couched in metal thread. The small\r\nfigure offers little information about its original context. \nEmbroidered lines, partly covered\r\nby a lozenge-patterned fabric, flank the figure,\r\nindicating original borders, now trimmed.\r\nNarrow bands such as this are likely to have\r\nserved as mitre lappets. Figures embellish the\r\nlappets of the mitres from Westminster Cathedral\r\n(10), Namur (6) and Braga (Tesouro-\r\nMuseu da Sé de Braga, mus. no. tmsb 1756 tex).\r\nBecause it has been worked on a light purple\r\nground fabric, the figure’s face is embroidered\r\nin white silk, whereas on the Westminster\r\nlappet the white ground fabric provides the\r\nskin colour for the face.
