This purple glass example was made in Venice by the famous glass-blowers on the island of Murano. The decoration in gold leaf and painted enamels was applied after the bowl had been shaped and gradually cooled. After decorating, the bowl went back into the mouth of the furnace, where the enamels would melt and fuse with the glass surface. Once fired, the enamels could not be rubbed off the surface.","physicalDescription":"Wilfred Buckley Collection","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Purple glass, enamelled and gilt","categories":[{"text":"ELISE","id":"THES48961"},{"text":"Glass","id":"THES48946"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Food vessels & Tableware","id":"THES48952"}],"styles":[{"text":"ITALY","id":"x29304"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AN6386","2017JW4695"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"131","id":"THES49882"},"free":"","case":"7","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tazza","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Venice","id":"x29237"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1475-1525","earliest":"1475-01-01","latest":"1525-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Wilfred Buckley Collection","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"21.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"conversion size only","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Footed bowl, blown, clear purple glass with enamelled and gilt decoration, Italy (Venice), 1475-1550","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"date for purple glass?","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.164-1936"],"accessionNumberNum":"164","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1936,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Glass gallery number","id":"THES50491"},"number":"8352"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-22","recordCreationDate":"1997-12-13","availableToBook":false}}
