The motifs in the lower border and the figures are outlined by a thicker thread. There is also a mesh background which imitates Mechlin bobbin lace. On a paved floor stand alternately jesters and women in mediaeval costume holding a bird. In between each figure is a flower sprig. There is also a lower scalloped border of leafy scrolls. A piece of machine made lace of a similar design exists in the Castle Museum, Nottingham. That piece was given to Nottingham by Madame Bourlander and was said to have been made in Calais in about 1890.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"lace making","id":"AAT53651"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Machine made lace","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Lace","id":"THES48926"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2012FR8427","2018LC3348"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES310843"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Border","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1870 - ca.1899","earliest":"1865-01-01","latest":"1903-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by an anonymous donor","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"9.75","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2.5","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1963/479","historicalContext":"There is a piece of machine made lace of similar design in the Castle museum, Nottingham.
