This tile is painted as though it is a canvas rather than conforming to a more formal design and, for that reason, it may have been acquired as an example of  'free' painting on ceramic.  The tile company Veuve Dumas (the widow Dumas) supplied a number of designers and decorators with blanks. Her customers included  J-T Deck who was overseer at the Dumas tileworks between 1851-56, before establishing his own workshop.","physicalDescription":"Tile, painted in blue with two figures, fighting, in a landscape","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Benigna de Callias","id":"A30991"},"association":{"text":"Designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Mme Veuve Dumas","id":"A30709"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, painted","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2019ME5273"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES340440"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tile","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1867","earliest":"1867-01-01","latest":"1867-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Acquired from Benigna de Callias","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"16","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"square","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"factory mark, but rubbed and indistinct"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tile, enamelled earthenware, France, 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"France","id":"x28849"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["1776-1869"],"accessionNumberNum":"1776","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1869,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-07-07","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
