The principal market for the tiles was for churches, both new and restored. The majority were used on floors, but this was not always the case.\r\n\r\n<b>Manufacturers</b>\r\nThe firm of William Godwin began production of encaustic tiles at Lugwardine near Hereford in 1852. Despite its mark, this tile was probably made at nearby Withington, where a second factory was established by the firm in 1863. Many of the tiles produced by the firm were based on medieval prototypes. Due to their authentic appearance, Godwin tiles were reputed to be favoured above those of other manufacturers by the architects George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878) and G.E Street (1824-1881) in their church restorations.","physicalDescription":"Tile, earthenware, with encaustic decoration in yellow and brown of four arcs ending in club-shaped finials arranged back to back with a central rosette, glazed","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Godwin, William","id":"A8439"},"association":{"text":"designed and made","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"William Godwin (& Son)","id":"A1467"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Encaustic decoration","id":"AAT53913"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Glazed earthenware with encaustic decoration","categories":[{"text":"Tiles","id":"THES48884"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2015HV8912"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES339650"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tile","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Hereford","id":"x32690"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1899-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"c.1870","earliest":"1865-01-01","latest":"1874-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"10.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"10.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions converted from the register.","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Reverse marked 'I' most likely for William Godwin.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Inlaid earthenware, the design in yellow and brown is of a form arcs ending in club-shaped finials arranged back to back, a rosette centrally, glazed.
